Chair in Rural and Northern Children's Health

November 14, 2005

New Canada Research Chair created at Laurentian University

Dr. Nancy Young, human kinetics professor, is the recipient of a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair in Rural and Northern Children's Health. This Chair is valued at $100,000 per year for a period of five years. Dr. Young has come to Laurentian from The Hospital for Sick Children and University of Toronto, where she developed a reputation as a leading Scientist in the measurement of children's health. She has led the development of several child-centric outcome measures. Her research to date has focused on children with complex physical disabilities and includes a mix of qualitative, quantitative and health services research methods.

At Laurentian, her research will include an emphasis on children in rural and northern regions. Her inter-disciplinary research program is currently supported by 2 CIHR grants. It is organized around 3 thematic areas: health status measurement, health care utilization, and evaluation of health delivery innovations. Through her research activities, Dr. Young seeks to foster better health among a vulnerable sector of society. Dr. Young will strive to ensure that children's voices are heard when their health is assessed and will pay particular attention to children who face unique health challenges due to isolation, distances and limitations in both health care resources and access.

"Laurentian is proud of the success of Drs. Kamber and Young, two bright researchers who will greatly contribute to the institution," stated Dr. Judith Woodsworth, President of Laurentian University. "Their research projects fit into the University's overall strategy to promote research in earth sciences and health, two areas that are of great importance to Laurentian and northern Ontario. Laurentian students are fortunate as they will have access to recognized world leaders in their fields of research."
